Access and Admission

Offered Places

  • 5% of places are reserved for disabled individuals.
  • Offer of places per implemented academic year: Up to 70 new enrollments.

Each academic year, places are offered in two phases: 100% of the places in the first phase (July-October), and 25% of them in the second phase (January-February), in case the places are not filled in the first phase.

There are admission quotas by access profiles (for disability, scholarships, collaboration agreements...). More information.

  • Admission modes in the program: Full-time and part-time students.

According to RD99/11 and the doctoral regulations of the University of Granada, the doctoral program allows for both part-time and full-time students. Given the specifics of the field of Educational Sciences, which attracts many practicing professionals to complete their training with a doctorate, it is appropriate to offer this mode of education, although it must not exceed 25% of the total student body.

The applicable regulations are the same for all students except for the duration of the doctoral studies. However, differential actions are considered in terms of temporal planning of training activities and mobility actions (planning, monitoring, and assessment) according to the mode of enrollment, both for full-time and part-time students, ensuring dedication, coherence with the program objectives, and acquisition of the intended competencies.

Students may change modes. For this, upon a student's request to change modes (part-time/full-time) and with the favorable report of the tutor and director, the academic committee of the program will decide on such change, which will take effect from the start of the course following the request.

  • Interaction and follow-up processes are essential: tutoring, contact with the director, and training activities. However, since many doctoral candidates are outside Granada, these processes can mostly be conducted online. Consult with the tutor. Additionally, there is a monitoring portal with identified access.
  • The program requires a minimum stay at the University of Granada of three months, MANDATORY, during the first year for students who do not reside at any of the program's locations. This should focus especially on the processes of development and defense of the research plan.

Access Requirements

  • Languages in which activities are conducted: Spanish. Some research seminars or interaction with non-Spanish-speaking researchers will primarily be in English.
  • Remember that it is essential to contact the research line in which you want to develop your doctoral thesis and obtain a direction endorsement. Consult research lines

Information and Documentation for Applying to the Program

It is very important to strictly comply with deadlines, procedures, and administrative requirements. Therefore, we recommend consulting the following links about doctoral administrative procedures:

It is a requirement of the program that you contact the doctor responsible for the research line in which you want to develop your thesis work. You can do this in person or electronically. For this purpose, consult the following list of line and research team leaders

Remember that two relevant aspects of the evaluation scale relate to this contact:
1) Endorsement of commitment to direct your work.
2) Precision in the description of your research object.
If you are unsure which line your thesis project can enroll in, consult with the program coordination, which will direct you to the most relevant research line for contact during the application phase.

Specific Admission Criteria

Compliance with all the requirements to pursue doctoral studies does not imply admission to the program. Alongside the general selection and admission criteria specified in the regulations (consult the link above), the program requires specific admission criteria.

The specific criteria are:

  • Document the prior contact with the person responsible for the research line and their commitment (mandatory), stating that, if selected, the line can take responsibility for your work plan.
  • Provide evidence of adequate initial training in “research methodology”. In total, this methodological training must exceed 24 ECTS.

This can be accredited either by:

• Courses or seminars organized, taught, and accredited by university institutions or research institutions.
• Formal research works (DEA and Master's Thesis in Research).
• Accreditation of the publication of research results in impact or indexed journals.
• Official accreditation of your participation in research projects funded in public calls.
  • Accredit a minimum of 12 ECTS of initial specific training in theoretical foundations in the area of knowledge and in the research line or related fields.
  • The CAD, after studying each application file, will issue a ruling on this matter, reserving the right – when “specific deficiencies” are detected – to request and require additional training in this regard.
• Graduates of professionalizing master's degrees or 300 ECTS degrees, directly related to Education, should complement their training with research methodology (as a general criterion, between 6 and 12 ECTS) and/or the completion of a Master's Thesis in Research. The CAD will, having studied each case, issue a personalized opinion on this matter.
• If you have completed your Master's Thesis in Research, “officially” participated and are accredited as a collaborator in a funded research project, or have articles published with research results in indexed journals (see conditions), you may be considered as having sufficient methodological training.
• If you come from master's degrees not directly related to Educational Sciences, you may be admitted (see general admission criteria) with complementary training to be undertaken during your first year, between 6 and 12 ECTS of theoretical foundations about education in an official master's, depending on whether you have a professional relationship accredited with education.
  • All candidates, regardless of the access profile, the process, or the application phase must meet the same admission criteria.
  • The Academic Committee of the program will be responsible for evaluating all applications and determining whether any of them should be assigned to a specific itinerary.

Scale

The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Educational Sciences will evaluate admission applications based on the following criteria:

  • Academic record (average grade) up to 30% (15% undergraduate and another 15% postgraduate). In each of these, a range between 0 and 5 will be established, with 0 being the score corresponding to the minimum grade necessary to pass undergraduate/postgraduate studies and 5 being the score corresponding to the highest possible grade. If the Degree, Master's, or equivalent qualification was completed abroad, an official academic record, a sworn translation of the same, and a “Declaration of equivalence of average grade” from the Spanish Ministry with jurisdiction in the matter must be provided.
  • Curriculum vitae. Previous experience in research and teaching, national and international mobility, as well as publications and participation in research projects will be valued. Up to 5%.
  • Knowledge of another language. Knowledge of English or other languages different from the co-official languages in Spain, which are especially important for carrying out the proposed doctoral thesis. The candidate must accredit a level B1 or higher. Up to 10%.
  • Presenting the endorsement of a professor from the program or a renowned researcher available to assume co-tutorship, direction, or co-direction of the thesis. Up to 30%. (This is a mandatory requirement in some research lines of the program)
  • Level of precision in the proposed research project Up to 10%.
  • Personal interview with the program coordinator or line of research leader. Having a scholarship for doctoral studies, motivation, and personal commitment to the Doctoral Program will be valued. Up to 5%.
  • Degree of Related Master's (candidates graduated from one of the official master's degrees listed on the right-hand menu of this website or with which the program has a specific signed agreement in this regard), up to 5%.

Specific Admission Criteria by Access Profiles

  • Those who documentally accredit a link as a Fellow or a Contract type FPU, FPI or similar (Carolina Foundation, Beca Chile...) with the University of Granada or with another of the collaborating institutions will be scored with 2 points.”
  • The program will reserve up to 5% of its places for candidates who meet all the academic requirements to enter the doctorate, have accredited some type of disability. This circumstance will be considered so that the doctoral candidate does not see their rights and possibilities diminished by their condition or disability.
  • The program may reserve a certain number of places (up to 30%) for candidates coming from programs and institutions with which the program has a specific collaboration agreement. However, with the following requirements:
• Each specific agreement will determine a maximum number of candidates per course.
• All candidates must meet all the academic requirements of the program. And must be pre-selected by a mixed committee between representatives of the institution or program with an agreement and a committee of the CAD of the doctoral program.
  • Given the particularity of the area, which leads many practicing professionals to want to carry out their doctoral thesis while balancing it with the practice of teaching, the program may dedicate each course up to 25% of the offered places to students with part-time dedication (18 places), without this constituting a specific quota reservation. To obtain this recognition, they must justify the need for this mode when submitting their admission application, or when this situation occurs. For them, extraordinary deadlines and the possibility of more flexibility in the selection and development of training activities are contemplated.
  • For doctoral candidates outside Spain, “online” procedures (GA3 and others) are contemplated that facilitate their normal training process and academic interaction.

Access Paths to the Research Period of the Doctoral Program

To access the Doctoral Program during its research period, it will be necessary to hold an official Master's degree, or another degree of the same level issued by an institution of higher education within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

Additionally, those who hold a degree obtained under educational systems outside the EHEA may also access without the need for official recognition of their degree, after verifying that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and that it qualifies in the issuing country for access to doctoral studies.

This admission does not imply, under any circumstances, the homologation of the previous degree held by the applicant, nor its recognition for any other purposes than to undertake doctoral studies.

Access may also be granted under any of the following conditions:

• Having completed 60 credits included in one or several University Masters according to the offer of the University of Granada. Exceptionally, those students who accredit 60 postgraduate-level credits that have been configured, according to the regulations of this University, by training activities not included in University Masters and who have a favorable report from the evaluating agency, according to what is established in article 24 of RD 1393/2007, may access the research period.

• Being in possession of a Graduate degree whose duration, according to Community law, is at least 300 credits.

• Being in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies, obtained in accordance with RD 778/1998 of April 30, or having achieved Research Proficiency as regulated in RD 185/1985 of January 23.

Admission Criteria for the Research Period

To be admitted to the research period of the Doctoral Program, candidate students must submit an application which will be assessed by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program. The admission and selection criteria for doctoral candidates will explicitly consider:

• The applicant's prior education, especially the competencies acquired during the postgraduate training period. Students who have completed one of the Master's degrees that constitute the training period of this Doctoral Program will be given preferential consideration.

• Their curriculum vitae. Among others, assessable merits will include the level of accredited language knowledge, professional experience, publications made, and reference letters from professors and researchers specialized in the subject endorsing their application.

• The research interests declared by the applicant.

• Their commitment to dedication to the Program.

• The viability and scientific interest of the thesis project presented, if applicable.

• The outcome of a personal interview, if applicable.

• For those applicants where “specific deficiencies” in training are detected, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program may require the completion of specific training supplements. These training supplements will be mandatory for those students whose access to the training period is guaranteed by holding an official Spanish degree of Graduate, with at least 300 credits, unless the curriculum of the corresponding degree includes research training credits, equivalent in educational value to the research credits from Master's studies.
